Canadian Tire Scratch Cards are Back! (Oct 22-24)

Canadian Tire is having another scratch card event! A scratch card should have been delivered with your flyer yesterday. This time the prizes are one of 3 $5000 gift cards, with the other cards having a value pf $5, $10, $25 or $50. Pretty sweet, I'd say. Not like last time with the cake!

Remember you can combine coupons with the scratch card (there are instructions for the cashier on how to do this on the back of the card) to maximize your savings. It's the perfect time to get some small items for free. For example, you can buy $5 worth of toilet paper and get $5 off from the scratch card - you'd only have to pay the tax! Or if you have Canadian Tire money, you can use that as well.

Happy shopping everyone!

Apple iPad - Product Review

So I've been using the Apple iPad for a while now and thought I'd share some of my thoughts on it.

The iPad comes in a regular Wi-Fi model and 3G model as well (which is about $100 more). The LED-backlit screen is touch sensitive and 9.56 x 7.47 inches, which makes it a little cumbersome to carry around in my purse (why not just use a phone and/or iPod?!) so I don't. The battery life is good, at 10 hours of surfing.

While it's definitely lighter than my laptop (1.5 lbs, 1.6lbs for 3G), has a fast start-up time and of course, the apps, a huge biggie puts me off: it doesn't support Flash. Steve Jobs, what were you thinking!! A lot of the sites I visit and videos I watch is Flash and so I'm limited to what I can do on the iPad. And no camera? What! It's pretty useless to me, except for checking my email and social media sites, or going on Youtube. Can't even watch my tv shows on it. Humph.

I still think it's just a glorified giant iPod and definitely not worth spending $549-$879 for one. It seems people automatically think a product is the greatest thing ever just because it has the Apple logo on it. Nice work on the marketing, Jobs.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab is coming out soon as the direct competition to the iPad, and I'm eager to see how it compares. Can't wait until November!

BrandSampler is back!

Conviction

Rushed down to watch Conviction tonight, starring Hilary Swank as Betty Anne Waters, who gives up her whole life to prove that her brother, Kenny Waters (Sam Rockwell) who has been put away for life without probation, is innocent.

Hilary Swank pulls off another strong performance. I thought it was a good movie, and very heartfelt, since it was based on the true story of Betty Anne Waters and Kenny in 1983. It's nice to know that there are some people that feel so close to their family and siblings that they'd give up so much. Betty Anne Waters now works to help free people who are wrongfully convicted of crime.

Convicted comes out in theatres Friday, October 15th. For more info on the film, go here.

Nowhere Boy

Went to watch Nowhere Boy tonight. It tells the story of John Lennon's adolescence, and his life with his Aunt Mimi and his relationship with his mother, Julia. It goes through how his first band, The Quarrymen, came about and his meeting of Paul McCartney.

I am not a Beatles fan, so I wasn't too interested in the movie, but it was very interesting to see this biopic about Lennon, and what he went through in his earlier days. Good movie for Lennon/Beatles fans!

For more information on Nowhere Boy, go here.

iPod 8GB Nano - 19,000 Points @ Save On Foods

While I don't really collect Save on More points at Save On Foods, I'm posting this because apparently it is a very good deal!

Save On Foods is offering a 8gb iPod Nano for only 19,000 Save on More points, limited to 4 per household. This would make a great Christmas gift if you have a lot of points to redeem (the exchange rate for this item is very good, compared to some of the other stuff they offer!).

Alex Burrows @ Best Buy Sunday 3-5pm (Lower Mainland Only)

Canuck's Alex Burrows is once again doing an autograph signing at Best Buy, this time at the Metrotown location, on Sunday, October 10th, from 3-5pm. Only the first 250 people in line will get a wristband for the meet and greet/autograph session. I went to the one at the Cambie store last time (it was first 300 people) and it was just a quick picture and autograph. Great for Canucks fans, if you want to meet Burrows in person!

Nintendo DS $99.99 at Shoppers

Shoppers Drug Mart has the Nintendo DS on sale once again for $99.99 (this is how much I bought it for)! There are limited quantities in store, and remember, Saturday October 9th is 20x the Optimum Points day if you spend $50 or more, so you'd be getting getting a ton more points if you buy it tomorrow!!

Remember to purchase a gift card first to get the points for that, then use it to pay for your DS, that way you are getting double your base points ;)

Also the Wii Fit Plus is $10 off, selling for $89.99.
Nintendo Wii console is $189.99 (not the greatest, but if you need it!)

Mario Nintendo DS games on sale

Walmart has Mario and Luigi Bowser's Inside Story as well as New Super Mario Bros. Nintendo DS games on sale for $29.83 this week.

While this is not the best price I have seen for them, official Nintendo games (especially Mario) rarely go on sale, and if you've been holding off for a sale this is it, if you need to buy it for a gift or for yourself or something. There might be better (or probably similar) sales closer to Christmas, and of course, Boxing Day!

Alice in Wonderland DVD - $6.99

Best Buy is celebrating their 8th anniversary and they have some door crasher sales.

One of them is Disney's Alice in Wonderland 2010 version of the movie, starring Johnny Depp. It is only the DVD though, but if you only were interested in watching the movie and don't care about special features and wanted to catch a new Disney movie at an awesome price, this is it! Disney movies rarely go on sale after the first release week, and after that they shoot up in price (like $40 for a DVD!).

The movie is on sale for $6.99 for three days only, October 8 to 10.

Buried

I went to an advanced screening of Buried, starring Ryan Reynolds. It's a low budget movie about Paul (Reynolds), a U.S. contractor working in Iraq as a truck driver. His convoy was attacked by Iraquis, and he wakes up to find himself buried inside a wooden coffin with only a lighter and a cell phone. He has to call to get help but the results are very disappointing.

The whole movie is just Ryan Reynolds in a box, you don't see anything else (super low budget!). It's all in the dark, with just bits of light from his lighter, cell phone and briefly from a flashlight and glow sticks. After the shocking ending, the movie left me feeling so bad and uncomfortable, and I think a lot of the other movie viewers thought the same. What a terrible, scary movie! I don't recommend this movie if you don't want to watch a man trapped in a box in the dark talking on a cell phone, because that's what the whole movie is about. Go for the big budget action flicks! Just rent this one on DVD if you're curious.

Buried comes out in theatres October 8th.

Free Vaseline Intensive Rescue Lotion

Secretariat

I just got back from an advanced screening of Disney's Secretariat!

Secretariat is the story of Penny Chenery, played by Diane Lane, who was the owner of the racehorse Secretariat. She tries to save her father's farm and believed in Secretariat to win the US Triple Crown (The Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes). He was the first horse in 25 years to the Triple Crown in 1973, and set the record for fastest time, winning by 31 lengths! I thought it was an excellent movie and the horse races have you at the edge of your seat, even though you already know the outcome. Diane Lane did a great job playing Penny, and John Malkovich injected some humour playing the trainer Lucien Laurin. It was a nice feel good movie that has you rooting for Penny and Secretariat. I'd definitely recommend it!

Secretariat comes out in theatres Friday, October 8th.

Glee

Now that it's fall, that means all the shows I watch are back on the air! I just caught up on Glee, which I think is one of the best shows out there right now!

If you haven't watched Glee (I don't know why you haven't), it's about these kids at at William McKinley High School, who are in a glee club "New Directions". They are basically the bottom of the high school food chain and super unpopular. Even the popular kids that join are made fun of. So there is a lot of singing, and for anyone who likes musicals, it's pretty awesome. Even if you don't like musicals. Because it is not a musical haha.

This is the second season and they seems to have a slate of celebrity cameos lined up for all their episodes! Which is great, but I don't really know how they can work everything into the story line. Oh well. It's a must see show (Chuck is also a great one) that airs Tuesdays at 8pm.

Beauty and the Beast $10 coupon

Disney is offering another $10 coupon for their newest Diamond Edition Blu-ray/DVD combo pack, for Beauty and the Beast. I love this movie and never had the chance to buy the DVD before it was put back into the Disney Vault, so I'm glad they are re-releasing it!

The movie comes out October 5th, and of course, it is always on sale the first week (in this case, four days)! Here are some good places to buy it and use the coupon:

Zellers - $17.99 after coupon

Futureshop, Toys R Us - $19.99 after coupon

Print out your coupon here.
